Fang Island

Among the ranks of the newer post rock greats such as ASIWYFA, Enemies, and Adebisi Shank, Fang Island is an absolute tour de force in bringing some of the happiest, fist pumpingest, generally dance your pants offiest music around. There's just something about those harmonizing guitars, driving bass and drums, and those synthesized arpeggios that screams EPIC. Download their Self Titled album here!

Cowboys Aren't Indians

Take a listen to this wonderfully washed out emo band out of Utah. If you like bands in the vein of American Football, you'll love this. They've got a couple EPs out but all I have here, for now, is their self titled. With two twinkly guitars, a ripping drummer, and a driving bass player, they're gonna show you some of the greatest hometown rock you'll ever hear.

It should be noted that for whatever reason, their bandcamp only has a few singles on it. If you happen to be involved in this band whatsoever and you see this, please put the remainder of your material up there for purchase/download!

Covet

Very tasty and noodlecentric tunes from this talented three piece. If you like your math rock peaceful and slightly melancholy with a focus on guitar then this band is for you. At the creative helm sits the very talented Yvette Young. Definitely check these folks out if you haven't already!

  1. Pelagic
  2. Nautilis
  3. Hydra
  4. Charybdis
  5. Currents

The Hitt Boyz

The Hitt Boyz are a four piece Post Rock/Math Rock outfit out of Oklahoma City, OK and they really rock my socks. Unfortunately, this band like a lot of others has that WBUS... "We Broke Up Syndrome." It really sucks that these wonderful acts never wind up leaving their local scene and just fizzle out. At any rate, their music is free on their Bandcamp too so that's pretty hype!

  1. INtRO
  2. Alphabitz
  3. Grandpa Song
  4. Fast Boy

Vasco De Gama

This four piece out of Liverpool really has some great music. I have to get around to purchasing the rest of their discography. This record is called "Geography" and it's a great stand out for fans of Indie, Alternative, or just music in general. Don't let the poppy feeling fool you, these guys know their shit musically. It's just so damn catchy though!

Geography (2013)

The Velocity Raptors

There's something about this that's really charming. The obviously DIY sound actually adds to the feel of this music. I really like it a lot. The Velocity Raptors is a one man ship from Manchester but I suppose he has a crew he plays out with considering the above photo. If you happen to see this, good looks dude. Can't wait to hear more from ya!

Macho Muchacho

Macho Muchacho hails from Guayaquil, Ecuador. When I first heard these guys, I had figured that they were an older band because their sound and production fit in with the older crowd of greats such as Rodan, Slint, or Tortoise. Unlike those guys, these guys absolutely shred at mach speeds like constantly and are absolute monsters when it comes to using looper pedals. This short but sweet record is definitely worth a listen!

Rodan

This band is a classic for fans of Post Hardcore and it's got some Post Rock elements thrown in for good measure! This album is technically their only full length record. It's a really great listen if you're trying to get into Nineties Math Rock/Post Rock.

Blog News #1 10/6/2016

Hello there everyone! I hope you all are enjoying the blog so far. I have some news about the distant future of this site coming your way so sit tight and read on.

We have a couple of folks designated to be doing some editorials on music in general coming aboard so I want to hype that a little bit. I won't say exactly what they'll be doing but know it's going to be good. I've known these people for a little while and they're good with what they do. They also happen to have excellent music taste so there's that! It might not be 100% related to Math Rock or whatever but it'll be good content nonetheless.

I also have a couple scheduled posts on the way and trust me, it's some great stuff! I might be a little slow with posts for the next couple days as we're expecting a new arrival at my household on Saturday. Not a child, a dog! I've been pretty busy prepping the place for our new canine companion so if it is a bit slow this upcoming weekend into next week, I apologize.

Other than that there's not really much I can say for right now. I have a few surprises planned in terms of additional content being brought to this lovely blog but I don't want to spoil it right now. One thing I do want to put out there is that you'll be seeing a short little post like this within the first week of every month to keep things on the up and up as to what's going on here in the current, and future, plan. I hope everyone's having a wonderful October and I will catch you all later!

- The Editor

Zaperlipopette!

If pop art had a music genre, this would be it. Everything about this band stands out like neon lights. This 4 piece out of Switzerland makes excellent use of layering angular guitar licks over eccentric vocal stylings (including rapping), erratic drumming, and toy synthesizers. I used the word "Eccentric" to describe the vocals but to be honest the whole band has that feel. This, of course, in the best way ever.

Iced Ink

Continuing with this country trend for whatever reason, I bring to you Iced Ink. They're a three piece that plays self proclaimed "Cartoon Music." It definitely caught my attention as well as making me feel like I was strolling along in an old "Ren and Stimpy" style animation. The technicality and catchiness are definitely A+ here though. I had actually meant to post their music on another music blog I had around a year ago. Check them out!

  1. Craws
  2. Green Machine

Yak Strangler

Here's a band I discovered quite a while ago by complete accident. Yak Strangler are a two piece out of Knoxville, Tennessee and they certainly have that southern charm. Their music is a very interesting mix of Blues, Southern Rock, and Math Rock. Check out their latest album here!

Delicious Death

This is a one man project. Allow me to repeat myself... Ahem... THIS IS A ONE MAN PROJECT. The music on this record is an absolute tour de force of not just Math Rock or Progressive music in general, but Jazz Fusion. I can't even think of words to describe how wonderful this album is. Remember the name Bob Baxter because you might be hearing about him in the next ten or fifteen years.

Still Death (2015)

  1. Hungry: Portrait of a Cereal Killer
  2. ManWitch
  3. Miami Rice
  4. Indiana Scones: Raiders of the Lost Tart
  5. Enemy of the Steak

Chinese Football

This band is definitely one of the first, if not only, bands I know based in China that rep that old school emo feel. At the same time however, they balance on catchy twinkly melodies and technically literate passages with such grace and ease. This four piece calls Wuhan home and if that doesn't work out, they certainly have a home in my heart. Also, I'll be getting around to picking up their newest album and uploading that here as well so keep an eye out!

  1. Game Start (Intro)
  2. Goalkeeper

Faraquet

Faraquet is just one of those bands who have everything it takes to be a super stand out act but kind of just fell through the cracks. Listed as one of the pioneers of both Post Hardcore and Math Rock in the late Nineties, their experimentation and seemingly catchy yet abrasive style is super charming as well as technically diversified. I've heard a couple more modern prog acts who definitely take influence. Here's their only full length album to this day.

The View From This Tower (2000)
  1. Cut Self Not
  2. Carefully Planned
  3. Fourth Introduction
  4. Song for Friends to Me
  5. Conceptual Separation of Self
  6. Study Complacency
  7. Sea Song
  8. The View From This Tower
  9. Missing Piece

Trade Wind

Here's a band I discovered last night. They have a lot of different things going for them. If I had to guess, I'd say they're pretty big fans of Deftones and Alice in Chains. It's neat to hear a modern band with a sound like this. This band totally could have made it huge ten or so years ago. I really like their sound though and I can't wait to hear more from them!

Suffer Just to Believe (2014)

The tracklisting for the files are jumbled but if you throw them into ITunes they should be correct.
  1. Fixed Blade
  2. Pulling Strings
  3. White Pipes
  4. Pain is a Gift
  5. Dead Leaves

Floral

This act from Palo Alto, CA really shreds! They're a two piece made up of a guitarist and a drummer. I actually had the opportunity to see them live but unfortunately I got tied up around an hour before the show. If you like the flashy, technical side of Math Rock this band is for you. Also, their guitarist uses Daisy Rock guitars. Imagine the endorsement possibilities!

  1. Aquarius Theater
  2. Balancing Act
  3. Cars
  4. Climbing a Wall
  5. Picture of Flower
  6. Temple

Floral - 2nd EP (2015)

  2. Town Picnic
  3. A Shepherd's Bumfit
  4. French for Vignette
  5. Unfair Treaty
  6. Spirit Marathon

American Football

I think it goes without saying that these folks are one of the founding fathers of modern indie/alternative music as well as math rock which is a pretty great feat.
